Cardiff gets final double

Hugh Farrelly

CARDIFF will host both 2011 European rugby finals, with the Cardiff City Stadium confirmed yesterday as the venue for the Challenge Cup decider on May 20.

The final of the Amlin-sponsored event will kick off at 7.45pm, the night before the Heineken Cup final in the Millennium Stadium (the sixth occasion it has been held there), and will be the first time the Challenge Cup decider has been held in Wales. With capacities of 74,500 and 26,828 respectively, the Millennium Stadium and Cardiff City Stadium could accommodate more than 100,000 fans over the two games.

Elsewhere, Sale Sharks have been dealt a major injury blow with the news that out-half Charlie Hodgson will be sidelined until well into the New Year with a fractured foot.

The England half-back wore a protective cast on his foot last week with the club hoping that the injury would prove to only be bruising and swelling, but X-rays have confirmed that the problem is more serious.
