Caitriona to shave head for charity and St Mary's pals are set to follow
NEXT month, former Leinster and St Mary's College RFC player Caitriona Bergin will be shaving her head in popular nightspot D2 and, in the process, raising vital funds for two charities which are close to her heart, Aware and Pieta House.
Caitriona currently works for the IRFU and has played her rugby in Waterford IT, St Mary's College RFC on Templeville Road and provincially at Leinster.
This isn't Caitriona's first foray in fundraising for the two charities. Last year alone, the Bergins raised more than €8,500 participating in the gruelling 'Hell & Back' challenge, an extreme obstacle course run by ITRA, in her brother's memory, while also raising awareness about depression.
On the taboo topic, Caitriona says: "I get very frustrated when people can't talk about depression. I feel helpless when I cannot do something to help. It saddens me to hear that depression is a 'DIRTY' word.
"People fear the label depression. That is why I want to do something different. To raise awareness, to destigmatise 'Depression,' to create a talking culture."
So, when Caitriona's thoughts turned to fundraising this year, she decided she wanted to do something perceived as completely out of the ordinary. She, thus, decided on a head shave. It has received some serious backing from some of Caitriona's pals in St Mary's and Leinster Rugby, many of whom will be shaving beards and waxing chests/legs in solidarity on the night.
A pal of Caitriona's, Sean Stenson, will be attempting a full body wax and Shane Lowry, the professional golfer and a friend of St Mary's, will be getting his beard shaved in solidarity.
Current Mary's player Darragh Keller and a couple of other surprise guests on the night will also be in on the action. So, if you happen to be around Dublin on May 10, drop in to D2 on Harcourt Street where 4th Avenue Beauticians will be waxing and shaving up a storm.
It all starts at 10.0pm and will go on till late. Alternatively, check out Caitriona's fundraising page and help make a difference. http://www.mycharity.ie/
