Boys in blue battling the odds

Trawling through the rugby results last weekend, I couldn't but be struck by the Leinster League Division 1A scoreline from Spollenstown -- Tullamore 100 Garda 0.

Registering a century of points in 80 minutes takes some doing and, while crediting the midlands club for that achievement, the real story is in the decline of Garda Rugby.

This is a result of ever-decreasing playing resources due in no small measure to the fall-off in new recruits in recent years out of Templemore.

Great credit is due to those still fighting the rugby fight, but it's been a tough start in what is already proving a difficult season for everyone involved at Westmanstown. And given these recessionary times, hard to imagine I know, it could yet get worse.

They seldom get the appreciation they deserve, but spare a thought for this branch of men in blue and the weekly rugby battle in adversity.
