best irish opensides
(61 caps, 1970-84)
Ireland's greatest No 7 and a star of the most famous Lions tour in 1974. Slattery had the pace, the football and the bit of dog needed for the openside and is a cert on Ireland's Greatest All-Time XV.
(11 caps, 1985-87)
The man from Ards brought in after Slattery's retirement, Carr was a central figure in Ireland's 1985 Triple Crown. Quick, hard and with an incredible sense of anticipation, Carr was ready to become a World Cup star when his career was ended by an IRA bomb in 1987.
(72 caps, 2000-present)
Not a traditional openside like the two above, but a remarkable athlete and ball-carrier and arguably Ireland's most consistent player of the last 10 years. If O'Brien can emulate Wallace's achievements in the No 7 jersey, he and Ireland will be doing okay.
