Thumb-sucking on the cards if Kiwis' star 'SBW' scores

Of all the rugby players who are currently touring with their teams in Europe, New Zealand's Sonny Bill Williams nailed the most surreal experience of the week.

It's easy to imagine coming to the end of a tour and feeling the pull of home. You're missing your family, your team-mates are starting to get under your skin, the table-tennis table is just too rickety and you're still adjusting to time zones. It all makes for a fairly intense time. And that's before the rugby.

So can you imagine how 'SBW' felt sitting in his hotel room as his wife Alana Raffie gave birth to their first child this week? He reportedly watched the birth via video link. I hope the hotel staff remembered to top up the boxes of Kleenex in his room.

'SBW' later posted a picture of the baby's foot with the caption "Proudest day of my life" with the Arabic hashtag "alhamdulillah", which means "all praise and thanks to god". So after only just returning to the New Zealand team, missing the birth of his first child is a pretty serious indicator of his dedication.

Of course, if he scores a try today against Wales, it might be a cue for baby-craddling or thumb-sucking.
