royal doubles delight

Meath's Tom Sheridan and Brian Carroll retained their M Donnelly 60x30 Senior Doubles Handball Championship – but they were made to fight all the way by the fired-up Mayo duo of Dessie Keegan and Joe McCann. Left-hander Sheridan had announced his retirement after last year's final win but reversed that decision and played a huge role in seeing off the Connacht side, who looked on the verge of an upset after winning the opening game 21-17. However, Meath upped the ante and turned it around to win 17-21 21-17 21-16.

There was better luck for Mayo in the intermediate singles as Stephen Cooney was highly impressive in seeing off Tipperary's Fergal Collins.

RESULTS – Intermediate singles: S Cooney (Mayo) bt F Collins (Tipperary) 21-7 21-6; Senior doubles: Meath (T Sheridan and B Carroll) bt Mayo (J McCann and D Keegan) 17-21 21-17 21-16; Minor doubles: Cork (M Hedigan and D Relihan) bt Meath (E Sheridan and R Fox) 21-12 21-14).
