There was a fresh twist in the Irish boxing doping scandal last night after middleweight Michael O'Reilly admitted to accidentally taking a supplement that contained a banned substance.

As a result, the boxer will be sent home from the Olympics and faces a possible two year ban. RTE had Bernard Dunne, Kellie Harrington and Mick Dowling on their boxing coverage this evening for the David Oliver Joyce fight and naturally the show started with the controversial topic.

Nobody on the panel offered sympathy for O'Reilly, with former professional world champion Dunne giving a particularly blunt assessment.

In a controlled - yet exasperated - manner, Dunne comprehensively outlined just how reckless O'Reilly was in taking an unauthorised supplement.

"He had done the hard part in qualifying for the games and post-qualification, he goes and probably makes the most idiotic decision he has ever made," Dunne said.

"Unless you are getting something from your national body, he shouldn't be taking it. Why is he not using the guys who are available to him in the association? Why is he not asking advice of people in the know? He is on the national team. He is a sponsored athlete. He is supplied with all these things. Why is he going outside of that to get stuff?"

Similarly, Dowling expressed misgivings as to the sort of advice athletes get when buying supplements from people who aren't affiliated with their team.

"In the supplement shops I'm sure there would be some well informed sales assistants but there would also be some people who wouldn't have a clue what they are giving you," he said.
