New OCI president Sarah Keane believes there needs to be more women in decision-making positions in Irish sport.

But she does not believe gender quotas are the immediate way forward.

Instead, she feels mentoring programmes for women should be tried first, with quotas a last resort if it is clear such initiatives are not having the desired effect.

"A number of years ago, accounting firms started to try to encourage more women into leadership positions," she said.

"They did this by giving extra support on mentoring and encouragement and then women went for jobs on merit, which is a way I would advocate.

"But if that doesn't work within a particular time frame then we would have to go to gender quotas."
