Ricky Burns to have surgery on broken jaw after title defence
Ricky Burns is to have an operation on a broken jaw sustained in his WBO lightweight title fight against Raymundo Beltran at the SECC in Glasgow on Saturday night, according to his promoter Eddie Hearn.
The Coatbridge fighter picked up the injury in the second round of his controversial title defence against the Mexican.
It seemed to most inside the arena that Beltran, who had Burns on the floor in the eighth, had clearly won the fight but one judge gave Burns the verdict by 115-112, another gave it to Beltran by 115-113 with the third judge scoring it 114 each.
Hearn praised Burns' courage in the post-fight press conference and tweeted in the early hours of the morning: "With Ricky in hospital -it's not good-clean break to jaw from 2nd round - staying in hospital and operation tomorrow."
The tweet included a picture of what appeared to be an X-ray of Burns' injury.
Burns had earlier tweeted: "Jaw defo broken, in agony here.
"Honestly dont know how I managed to get through that fight.
"Thanks to every1 for their support tonight."
