Revealed: The most tweeted Irish sports moment and sports star of the year

It was a month of highs and lows, tears of sorrow and tears of joy.

Euro 2016 gripped the nation as Ireland advanced to the last 16 of the tournament only to fall short agonisingly against hosts France.

New heroes were born - most notably Robbie Brady as he rose highest against the Italians to secure a memorable win and book Ireland's place in the last 16. Will we ever forget that picture of his brother in tears at the final whistle?

Euro 2016 was king of Twitter also with that Ireland v Italy match among the most tweeted moments in Ireland in 2016.

Included amongst the most Tweeted about moments in Ireland in 2016 were (measured in Tweets per minute):

It was a big, big year for Conor McGregor and this was reflected on Twitter with the Notorious second in top trends for people in the year of 2016 with only the soon-to-be most powerful man in the world - Donald Trump - ahead of him at number one.

Robbie Brady also made it into the top 10 with Pat Hickey, Muhammad Ali and Anthony Foley.
