Winning start for Teddy
Laois 3-13 DIT 2-14
Teddy McCarthy got his reign as Laois senior hurling manager off to a winning start on Saturday, but his side needed extra-time to see off the challenge of DIT in Rathdowney.
DIT, aided by a strong breeze in the first half, opened up a seven-point lead at the interval. A flurry of early goals saw Willie Dunphy strike for Laois, before Aodhan McInerney registered a quick double for the students.
Another goal from Dunphy did little to break the DIT dominance.
However, Laois slowly but surely worked their way back into the game after the break, though the wind played havoc with their shooting and it wasn't until injury time that Matthew Whelan finally got them level with a long-range effort.
That sent the game to extra-time, and Laois were just that bit stronger in the additional 20 minutes, with a brace of points from Dunphy guiding them to a hard-fought two-point win.
They will now play Dublin in the quarter-finals.
