What in the world is going on at the Tour de France?

Leader Chris Froome looked to be perfectly poised to add to his advantage during today's stage, an arduous climb of Mont Ventoux.

However, disaster struck after a rider just ahead of him collided with a cameraman on a motorcycle, sending a number of riders sprawling to the ground.

It appears that Froome's bike was damaged beyond repair in the crash, because the Team Sky cyclist then set off on foot, jogging up the steep incline as if it was the final stage of a triathlon.

Froome has since got a new bike and while his delay initially saw him drop back to sixth, Tour de France officials have made a ruling and the defending champion remains in the Yellow Jersey.

When Lance Armstrong is calling the stage a mess, you know that something has gone significantly awry.
