US trio earn trials verdict

Bernard O'Neill

MIKAELA MAYER, Virginia Fuchs and Olympic champion Claressa Shields will be ex-Irish head coach Billy Walsh's trio in the Olympic weight classes for women heading into the Rio 2016 qualifiers next year.

The three emerged from the USA Olympic trials at the weekend in Memphis, with Walsh, who was recently appointed USA head coach, at ringside. Mayer edged Jajaira Gonzales, who beat Ireland's Ciara Ginty in the 2014 Olympic Youth final, on a split decision in the 60kg decider in Memphis.

The LA lightweight, with Walsh (above) working her corner, could meet Ireland's Katie Taylor in the World Championships and Olympic qualifiers in Kazakhstan next May.

Women's boxing is restricted to three Olympic weight classes - fly, light and middle. Fuchs will represent the USA at fly and Shields at middle.

Walsh's first competitive outing as USA coach will be at an Olympic test event in Rio early next month. Walsh is also planning to bring the USA to Sheffield for a training camp.

Meanwhile, Katie Taylor has entered for the National Elite Men's and Women's Championships. Women's boxing begins on November 13 and men's on November 21 at Dublin's National Stadium.
