Twirl turns on the style

John Linehan's Cork challenger Droopys Twirl posted the joint-fastest time ever for a bitch around Shelbourne when winning her semi-final of the Sporting Press Irish Oaks on Saturday night in a sensational 28.22.

She had a great battle with Mutual Decision to the third bend before asserting to race home a six-and-a-half-length winner, with Jimney Cricket taking the third spot.

Marie Gilbert's Mozzletoff was also brilliant in the opening heat. Making a slick exit from trap five, she soon moved past Maggies Whistle before drawing away down the back straight. Maggies Whistle began to close but Mozzletoff stuck her nose out to claim a half-length victory in 28.40. Third spot went to Cool It Baby a further two and a half lengths away.

A second track record in the Classic was posted by Paradise Casino in the quarter-finals of the Kerry Agribusiness Irish St Leger at Limerick on Saturday. Pat Buckley's dog led early to win by three and a half lengths from Carrowkeal Rocky in 29.51.

Other impressive winners were What A Tornado and Judicial Academy as they both went around in 29.59, while the other heat winner was Big Appetite in 30.11.

Graham Holland's Leeview Jet set yet another Drumbo Park record when scorching around in 29.51 for the 550 yards in the first semi-final of the Northern Irish Derby. Leeview Jet flashed from the three box and came home seven lengths clear of Cian Abbey in 29.51, with Rafas Wee Pet three lengths away in third.

The Francis O'Brien-trained Loughview Gem led off the second bend in the other heat and won by two lengths from Star Head in 29.79, with Elwick Bolero back in third.
