Watch: ESPN commentator slammed for Venus Williams 'gorilla' comment
An ESPN commentator sparked outrage after he urged Venus Williams to "put on the gorilla effect" during the American's match with Stefanie Voegele at the Australian Open.
Williams cruised into the second round with a 6-3 6-2 win over Voegele but the main talking point came when ESPN's Doug Adler said: "She misses a first serve and Venus is all over her.
"You see Venus move in and put the gorilla effect on. Charging."
Adler's comments sparked outrage on social media and ESPN have, so far, not commented on the issue.
New York Times writer Ben Rothenberg tweeted: "This is some appalling stuff. Horrifying that the Williams sisters remain subjected to it still in 2017."
Doug Adler needs to apologize to Venus and fired from @ESPN. Under no circumstances do you make an analogy of a gorilla to a woman of color— Shanna (@PinaCocoblog) January 18, 2017
Given his comments ,tennis buff Doug Adler could have been invited to Trump's inauguration without needing One Nation- like begging— Laurie Ferguson (@LDTFerguson) January 19, 2017
