The US Open crowd brought Argentine favorite Juan Martin Del Porto to tears last night - in a memorable moment at the end of his quarter-final against Stan Wawrinka.

Del Potro has long been a firm favourite of the New York crowd and the comeback of the 2009 US Open champion has been one of the stories of the tennis year in 2016.

After his career appeared to be winding towards a miserable conclusion due to a persistent wrist injury, Del Porto has made a sparkling return to form this year and his presence in the latter stages of the US Open clearly enchanted the home fans.

Cheering his name and standing to acclaim their hero, Del Potro had to wipe away the tears before Wawrinka served out the final game of the match to end his hopes of making it all the way to the final on Sunday.

“I can lose the match, but I will never forget this. It’s bigger than a win in any match,” said Del Potro in his post match press conference. “This was difficult to describe. Amazing moment.”
