Halep and Wozniacki progress in Paris
Top seed Simona Halep reached the second round of the French Open a day later than expected and not without a fright as she recovered from a slow start to beat American Alison Riske 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 yesterday.
The Romanian world No 1 stayed under wraps until the fourth day of the tournament after her opening match was cancelled on Tuesday evening because of a schedule backlog.
It appeared some of Tuesday's rain had got into the works as she lost the opening five games, sprinkling unforced errors across Court Philippe Chatrier, but there was no sign of panic and her game eventually clicked into gear and she soon rallied. Halep will be back in action today against American wildcard Taylor Townsend.
Fourth seed Elina Svitolina advanced with a regulation 6-3, 6-4 victory over Slovakia's Viktoria Kuzmova while twice Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova took just over an hour to beat Spain's Lara Arruabarrena 6-0, 6-4.
Second seed Caroline Wozniacki turned in a ruthless display to defeat big-serving Spanish qualifier Georgina Garcia Perez 6-1,6-0 in 51 minutes.
