Tennis: Fitzgerald secures spot in semi-finals
GREYSTONES man Niall Fitzgerald clinched a spot in the semi-finals of the National Indoors Championships at David Lloyd Riverview last night.
The 21-year-old, runner-up in 2010, saw off the challenge of fellow US-based tennis scholarship student Tommie Murphy 6-1 7-6 (7/4).
In the first men's singles quarter-final to finish, Dublin-based Lazare Kukhalashvili beat former National Championship U-18s runner-up Mark Carpenter 7-5 6-1.
Meanwhile, world No 2 Rafael Nadal plans to take several weeks off after the Australian Open to properly recover from a nagging shoulder injury. The first Grand Slam event of 2012 starts on January 16.
