Tennis: Conor Niland hangs up his racquet

CONOR NILAND has called time on his professional tennis career just four days before he was set to be dislodged as the Irish No 1 by James McGee.

However, Niland's decision has nothing to do with the fact that he is about to be leapfrogged in the world rankings by his Davis Cup team-mate.

A persistent hip problem, which first manifested itself in a Futures tournament in Bosnia four years ago, has led to the 30-year-old Limerick man quitting the chase for world ranking points after seven years on the pro circuit.
