Ireland's 26 year wait for a swimming gold medal at the World University Games is over after Shane Ryan broke the Irish record in Taipei today.

Ryan had just one hundredth of a second to spare over American Justin Ress in second.

The US-born Irish swimmer qualifies for Ireland through his father Thomas, who hails from Laois.

It's only the second time in history Ireland have got their hands on a swimming gold at the World University Games after Gary O'Toole's win in 1991.
