Surgeoner clinical for Pegasus

Irish Senior Cup holders Pegasus made light of the Three Rock Rovers challenge as they racked up an overwhelming 7-0 first-round victory at Grange Road.

The prospect of Rovers causing an upset effectively disappeared within two minutes of tip-off when Vanessa Surgeoner struck the first of her four. Suzanne Beaney claimed two, with Stephanie Quinn completing the slaughter against opponents who were far off the pace, though Sarah Anne O'Connor and Laura Haughton appeared to enjoy the challenge.

The winners will not find the going as easy in the next round as they have been paired with arch Ulster rivals Ballymoney.

While Three Rock struggled, other Leinster sides made the grade, with Loreto clocking up five against Lisnagarvey up north.

UCD registered four down south at Cork Harlequins, despite the best efforts of Quins 'keeper Vanessa Sargent.

The one major surprise of the day was the success of unfancied Trinity who came though a penalty shoot-out to scuttle Ards.
