Hero sailor Gregor McGuckin insists he had no doubt he would be fine despite his yacht rolling over twice as he attempted to sail around the world.

McGuckin (32) - from Goatstown in Dublin - saw the top of his boat badly damaged after an enormous storm on September 20-21 as he attempted at the Golden Globe Race.

While he had no worries of sinking, McGuckin knew he was out of the race and had heard injured Indian sailor Abhilash Tomy was close by and in serious difficulty.

McGuckin managed to repair his boat and made a brave attempt to save Tomy. "I think anybody in that situation would have done exactly the same thing. I was the closest boat," he said.

"In that remote part of the ocean, it could potentially be weeks until somebody could get to him," he added.

Both were saved by a French fisheries patrol vessel on September 24.
