Star attractions light up Family Festival

Catherina McKiernan and Kate Veale will be among the special guests at Farmleigh in the Phoenix Park this Sunday for the annual Athletics Ireland Family Fitness Festival.

McKiernan will take part in the Family Mile Challenge -- a free-to-enter event that starts at 10.0 in the grounds of Farmleigh.

The former Olympian and four-times World Cross Country silver medallist will run with her children, Deirbihle and Patrick, and will be available through the day to talk with parents and children about running -- especially ChiRunning, which she actively promotes throughout the country.

There's also an opportunity to meet one of Ireland's brightest young athletics prospects at Farmleigh -- new World Youths race-walking champion Veale (pictured right), who will demonstrate the technical aspects of her event during what should be an action-packed afternoon.

This is a great opportunity for parents and children to meet a young rising star of Irish sport -- an athlete, who just like McKiernan, loves meeting people and sharing her sporting experiences.

Other events at this day-long Festival at Farmleigh include: McDonald's Little Athletics -- running, jumping and throwing events; Athletics Ireland little toddle; speed gates; orienteering challenge; and the Kellogg's Summer of Discovery Roadshow.

The Festival at Farmleigh is supported by the Irish Independent, Dublin City Council , SPAR, 'Irish Runner' magazine and RTE 2fm.

There will also be a special Expo Area at Farmleigh, where stands include: Elverys with their Gait Analysis Service to help you choose the running shoe most suitable for you; the Road Safety Authority, who will be promoting the message of safety on the roads; Health Matters -- a fitness testing service with Sean Kinnane; 'Irish Runner' magazine, which is celebrating 30 years of publishing; and Athletics Ireland Fit 4 Life promotion, the programme to get you walking, jogging or running.
