Sports council in drug warning

The Irish Sports Council has joined the growing list of bodies warning athletes against using supplements because of the recent flurry of positive drug tests for methylhexaneamine, WRITES CLIONA FOLEY.

South African rugby players Chiliboy Ralepelle and Bjorn Basson were sent home after being found to have the stimulant in their system when they played in Ireland recently. They joined a growing list of athletes to have tested positive for what has become an increasingly common, and often unknown ingredient, in nutritional supplements.

Also known as DMAA, it was added to the World Anti-Doping Agency's (WADA) illegal list last year after a group of Jamacian athletes tested positive for it. Under current regulations, it can earn athletes a maximum two-year ban but is expected to be soon downgraded by WADA to the less serious category of 'specified stimulant', which usually carries just a three-month suspension.

Out-half Kevin McGrath's 17 points helped Skerries Community College to qualify for the Leinster Schools 'A' McMullen Senior Cup final, as they defeated Sandfork Park 27-20 at The ALSAA Grounds yesterday.

The northsiders took a 20-3 lead into the break, with tries coming from Eoghan Carron and Sean Fox. Elliot Finn-Phillips raised hopes of a comeback when he touched down after the break but McGrath scored and converted a try to re-establish a healthy lead, with John Naughton and Terance Robson's late tries not enough for Sandford.

A second-half scoring spree fired Colaiste Mhuire Johnstown/Colaiste Pobail Osrai into the Leinster Vocational Schools senior hurling final in Palmerstown yesterday as they convincingly beat Abbey Community College, Ferrybank, by 3-19 to 2-3.

The Kilkenny side led 1-7 to 1-1 after a well-contested first half but piled on the points after the break as they hit Abbey with a flurry of scores.
