School's Hockey: Madeley's golden touch
Shane Madeley's seventh-minute strike proved the golden touch for Wesley as the Ballinteer school picked up its second All-Ireland title this season, gaining instant revenge over St Andrew's.
It proved the sole separator between two well-matched sides, facing off just a fortnight after Andrew's had annexed the Leinster Senior Cup by a single goal.
The competition was intense, with the final very much a war of attrition as numerous players succumbed to cramp in what was their third game of the day.
An early Peter English penalty corner shot served as a warning before Alan White created the goal for Madeley, when he drew two defenders before laying the ball into the striker's path to roll home from six yards.
Andrew's toiled hard and Fiachra Maher almost rounded goalkeeper Rob Fitzgerald only for Neal Megarity to clear off the line.
Wesley, though, held out for their third piece of silverware this term and stay in fine fettle ahead of the European schools' championships.
