Ryan takes top award

Deirdre Ryan (left) was named Athlete of the Year at Athletics Ireland's annual awards dinner in association with Woodie's DIY and Tipperary Crystal on Saturday night.

Ryan (Dundrum South Dublin) took the top gong after making a great leap forward when finishing sixth at the World Championships in Daegu.

Ciaran O'Lionard won the Inspirational Performance of the Year award after a fantastic season in which he knocked four seconds off his 1500m personal best.

Meanwhile, Fionnuala Britton, boosted her European Championship prospects by finishing a highly commendable sixth in a high class international cross-country race in Burgos, Spain, yesterday.

Linet Masai of Kenya, winner of the gold medal in the 10,000m at the World Championships in Berlin two years ago, won the race in 24:20 with Britton crossing the line in 25:32
