Ruth's quintet progress

Shelbourne Park produced some amazing action on Saturday night as five Dolores Ruth dogs qualified for the quarter-finals of the Irish Derby.

On an evening of thrills and shocks, the Rathangan trainer took six dogs to the third round, and all but one made it through.

Three of the five scored memorable victories. Makeshift and Razldazl Bugatti took early leads in their respective heats to win in 29.58 and 29.91, but Razldazl George survived a massive scare in his 29.84 victory.

Both Razldazl George and Melodys Royal totally missed their starts in Heat 6 but performed heroics in getting to the front by halfway. From there they had a battle royal, with George emerging on top by a length from Melodys Royal.

Razldazl Jayfkay had to pull all the rabbits from the hat in surviving a very poor start in Heat 3.

Conor Fahy's reigning Derby champion Tyrur McGuigan flew out here and led all the way to win by three-and-a-half lengths from Ballymac Mitsy in 29.83, with Jayfkay a length-and-a-half third.

There were also brilliant wins from the Ronny Wuyts-trained Rockchase Bullet in 29.61 and Pat Fallon's Pepsi Billy in 29.64, while the other heat winners were Airforce Roger in 30.08 and Croom Star in 29.86.
