Rowing: Lambe pipped in bronze push

Ireland's Claire Lambe sculled the race of her life at the World U-23 Championships in Lithuania yesterday only to miss a podium finish by the narrowest of margins.

The UCD athlete was almost four seconds off the pace after 500m, but a strong push in the next quarter brought her into second place at halfway.

As the second half of the course opened up, Emma Fred of Sweden, who beat Lambe to the line in their semi on Friday, took advantage of a more sheltered lane to mount a strong challenge for silver, but Lambe looked confident in third.

But in a race for the line, Anna Ioannou of Cyprus snatched the bronze.

Holly Nixon and Laura d'Urso, who missed an 'A' final place by one slot in the qualifying semi for the double sculls on Friday, finished second in the 'B' final to take eighth place overall.
