Red-hot Maestro can blaze a trail for Reynolds

While the €70,000 Pick 6 Intertrack Jackpot will command much of the interest at the tracks, the main focus will still be on the track action and, in particular, the second semi-final of the Joe Dunne Memorial Puppy Stake.

It contains the three favourites in the ante-post lists, Oran Maestro, Slippery Robert and Skywalker Apollo and it would constitute a major shock if anything else led them home.

The Davy Reynolds-trained Oran Maestro will be red-hot following his most impressive 28.25 victory last week and if he can repeat that 2.02-second first section he will already be on his way to victory.

Slippery Robert is clearly the main threat. Robert Gleeson's charge walked out last week, but can go up much faster, as his 28.28 and 28.30 clocks confirm. He is a much stronger tracker than he showed then and he can provide Oran with a battle, but hardly a defeat.

The other semi-final is much more open, but Tony Grassick's Aoifes Hope is very strong and he has won his last six on the trot.

Early pace is this fellow's forte and he can build up a winning lead in a race where Slippery Sooty and Highview Report could be the main dangers.

The Pick 6 contests at both Limerick and Shelbourne are tricky. It kicks off at the southern venue with O Garney Patch nominated for the opener, but I would recommend a good spread of runners in a very open second leg.

In the third it could be a match between Raggletaggle Rio and big-finishing Gizmo Classic.

Looking at the last three Shelbourne legs, Money Talks can be banker material in the Open 525, while Run Samson Run is nominated to lead home Royal Diva and Pookies Rosie in the A1 550.

In the concluding leg it may be worth banking on Airforce General getting an opening to deliver his big finish.

The heats of the Feramo D Open 525 will be run at Limerick, while at Curraheen the second-round heats of the Guinness Trophy are down for decision.

The weekend will conclude with a terrific card at Clonmel tomorrow (7.30), which features the final of the Red Mills Open Unraced. It has been an absorbing event with Ballyhill Beryl having entered the picture as a live threat to Ashford Castle and Glenanore Dancer. Ashford could be the worst drawn and Glenanore can resume winning ways.
