Grainne Murphy and Melanie Nocher made a record-breaking start to the European short course championships in Poland yesterday.
Murphy, fresh from qualifying for next year's Olympics in the 800m freestyle, set an Irish senior record for the 200m individual medley, finishing in 19th with a time of 2:12.71, while Shani Stallard set a personal best of 2:16.36. Murphy also swam in the 200m butterfly heats, finishing in 18th place with 2:12.13.
Nocher, a 2008 Olympian, qualified for the semi-finals of the 100m backstroke event with an an Irish senior best of 59.37. And she lowered that time further in last night's semi-finals, clocking 59.30 but missing out on a place in the final.
Also in the 100m backstroke, Kilkenny's Jane Roberts set a new Irish junior record of 1:02.29 and a PB in the 100m freestyle of 57.70. Bethany Carson set a PB in the heats of the 100m freestyle in 55.91, finishing just ahead of Clare Dawson (56.09). Nicholas Quinn (Castlebar SC) and Dan Sweeney (Sunday's Well SC) also performed strongly, setting times of 1:02.95 and 1:03.23 respectively in men's 100m breaststroke.
