Razldazl George shines

The time of 29.88 returned by Razldazl George in Saturday night's Irish Derby at Shelbourne Park may not appear special, but, on a track which was running extremely slow following torrential rain, it was a quite astonishing effort.

It completed a highly successful first round for trainer Dolores Ruth's dogs, with six half-brothers, including four of the leading fancies -- in the second round.

George, though, emerged as the first-round star as he led home Soviet Marco by 11 lengths.

Defending champion Tyrur McGuigan did everything right for PJ Fahy in Heat 23 as he broke fast and led all the way for a two-length margin over big finishing Express Trend in 30.36. His litter brother Tyrur Big Mike looked to be on his way out when missing the start and then losing considerable ground on the opening bend of an eventful final heat. However, he came battling back to claim third place behind Barefoot Bullet and Mozzletoff in 30.61.

Fahy, who has 14 dogs in the second round, had a treble in the heats as he came up trumps with Tyrur Lucky in 30.19 and Tyrur Monica in 30.62 as well as Tyrur McGuigan. Paul Hennessy also had a treble, courtesy of Colorful Champ (30.35), Hello Ringo (30.30) and Barefoot Bullet. Other impressive runs were served up by Melodys Royal (30.33) and Smooth Daddy (30.26).
