Paul Pollock (Annadale Striders AC) and Maria McCambridge (Letterkenny AC) took the honours at the National Half Marathon Championships in Athenry yesterday.
Pollock, a doctor at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, was well placed over the first six miles, with Gary O'Hanlon (Clonliffe Harriers AC), Sergiu Ciobanu (Clonliffe Harriers AC) and Sean Hehir (Rathfarnham WSAF) in close attendance. He then picked up the pace and made the decisive break after six miles to secured victory in 64:17 in only his third race over the distance.
Ciobanu finished second in 66:47, with defending champion Hehir taking third in 67:05.
Ciobanu led Clonliffe Harriers team to victory ahead of City of Derry AC and Rathfarnham WSAF.
McCambridge was a class apart in the women's race, leading from the start, with her time of 75:25 placing her 36th overall.
Barbara Cleary (Donore Harriers AC) finished second in 77:17 and Barbara Sanchez (Raheny Shamrock AC) was third in 77:27.
Cleary also led Donore to victory in the team category, ahead of Raheny Shamrock AC and Clonliffe Harriers.
