Pacquiao looks to cement greatness


Manny Pacquiao is bidding to cement his place among boxing's greats tonight when he takes on Antonio Margarito in a WBC super-welterweight bout in Texas.

The Filipino, who boasts a 51-3-2 record (38 knockouts), has already established himself as one of the best fighters of all time and is widely expected to beat his Mexican rival.

Although Margarito enjoys a significant height, weight and reach advantage, Pacquiao is much faster and has his sights fixed on a world title in an unprecedented eighth weight class.

"I don't need to prove any more," Pacquiao said. "I have already achieved what I wanted. I want to maintain my greatness and to entertain people."

ALEX CUSACK hit an unbeaten century and new boy Hamish Marshall weighed in with 72 as Ireland completed a crushing 218-run victory over hosts Pune yesterday at their World Cup training camp in India.

Clontarf all-rounder Cusack smashed five sixes before retiring on 100 not out from 107 balls, while former New Zealand star Marshall contributed two maximums to Ireland's impressive 301-9. Allan Eastwood then grabbed 3-29 as the home side were shot out for 83 in 21.4 overs.

An injury-time point from Stephen Maher snatched a draw (1-14 apiece) for St Fergal's Rathdowney against hosts Colaiste Mhuire Johnstown in a thrilling Leinster Vocational Schools SH clash yesterday.

Shane Donnelly's goal had put Colaiste Mhuire 1-5 to 0-6 ahead at the interval and with wind advantage in the second half they surged clear. They were six points up with five minutes to go but a goal from substitute Pat Whelan and points from Maher and Tadgh Dowling narrowed the gap to the minimum.

Conor Martin's late free looked to have sealed it, but Niall Delaney replied and then Maher levelled.
