Triathlon: Morrison fails to fire in Hamburg

OLYMPIC-BOUND Irish triathlete Aileen Morrison got hit with a time penalty and finished a disappointing 36th in her last pre-Games event.

She went to Hamburg -- where she took a bronze medal in 2010 -- as one of the race favourites, but nothing went right for her yesterday.

She had a problem with her wetsuit at the first transition and ended up in a chasing pack of cyclists who got close to the lead group at T2, but she failed to dismount her bike in time and had to serve a 10-second penalty on her run and a subsequent stitch put her well out of contention, two weeks away from her Olympic debut.

Elsewhere, Eimear Mullan made history by becoming the first Irish athlete to be crowned Ironman champion after she clinched victory in yesterday's Ironman UK.

Mullan completed the 3.8km swim, 180km bike and full marathon in 10hrs 8mins 44sec, giving her an eight-minute winning margin over Amanda Stevens of the USA.
