Silver -- but Nevin is still our champ

MULLINGAR'S John Joe Nevin boxed like a champion -- but in the end it unfortunately wasn't enough to win when he went up against British boxer Luke Campbell at London's Excel arena last night.

While it was a closely fought contest over three rounds, it was Campbell who prevailed by 14 points to 11 to take the coveted gold, leaving the Irishman to console himself with silver.

Having conceded the first round by 5 points to 3, Nevin clawed back half the 2-point difference in the second round to trail Campbell by 9 points to 8. With just one minute and 30 seconds to go, however, the Mullingar man was floored.

Apart from the point conceded, it was to be just one of a number of decisive moments in his bout against Campbell, whom Nevin had previously fought twice.

In 2009, it was Nevin who won, defeating Campbell 13-2 at the EU Championships in Denmark. The tables were turned when the pair met at the AIBA World Championships in Azerbaijan, with Campbell securing a countback decision when they tied on points in the semi-finals.

Last night, to Great Britain's delight and to Nevin's eternal dismay, the victory went to Campbell.
