Boxing: Berlino's barking mad
KATIE Taylor was always a shoo-in for the Irish flagbearer's job, but a certain dog who is very popular on the Irish sporting Twittersphere has wiggled his little wet nose at the decision.
"I did kinda expect to be asked to carry the flag but I guess people can't get past me being a dog," tweeted @berlinolabradoodle.
Another mutt called Alvinsday replied "Irish doodles are outraged at this blatant case of doodleism. First Krufts, now this!! Serious paws for thought required."
Another four-legged mate called 'greencappucino' tweeted: "Distraught you're not our flagbearer. I mean they let horses in, what's their problem with a Doodle? #barking mad."
Berlinolabradoodle (below) is the Twitter account of Derval O'Rourke's exceptionally cute pet, and his witty quips and photos are always worth a look.
O'Rourke's boyfriend Peter O'Leary, who is also competing in London in sailing's 'Star' class, gave her the labradoodle pup as a present for winning silver at the 2009 Europeans and she named him 'Berlino' after that event's loveable bear mascot.
Elsewhere, boxer Paddy Barnes is fast becoming the heavyweight tweeter of the Irish team after posting a picture of himself and Andy Murray in the athletes' village, saying "me and some tennis player, he hassled me for a pic. Anyone know him?"
