Athletics: Minnock primed for Olympic push
IRISH Olympic hopeful Barry Minnock surprised himself by running a fast 2:17.40 time in the Hannover marathon yesterday.
The Rathfarnham athlete had only intended running 25km of the race as pacing preparation for the Copenhagen marathon on May 20 but he felt so good that he kept going. He confirmed yesterday that he still intends running in Copenhagen in his bid to get the 2:15 qualifying time.
Elsewhere, Crusaders sprinter Stephen Colvert set a new Irish U-23 100m record of 10.35 seconds in California.
Joanne Cuddihy (Kilkenny City Harriers), who clinched Olympic qualifying last week, was second behind Botswana's world champion Amantle Montsho (50.52) in the 400m in Kawasaki, Japan, in 51.78.
