Two Irish sporting superstars have been included in a prestigious list charting the 100 most famous athletes in the world.

The ranking, complied by ESPN, measured a competitor's salary, endorsements and social media following to form its judgement. There is no surprise in the top three, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Lebron James and Lionel Messi finishing atop the podium in that order.

But MMA star Conor McGregor and golfer Rory McIlroy aren't far behind, finishing in 37th and 20th respectively.

McIlroy finished directly ahead of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Luis Suarez and Ronda Rousey, which is a strong indicator of how well known the Northern Irishman has become.

For his part, McGregor finished one spot ahead of NFL legend Peyton Manning, which speaks to how much the Dubliner's profile has grown in the US recently.

Here is the complete top ten:

10. Rafael Nadal

9. James Rodriguez

8. Virat Kohli

7. Tiger Woods

6. Kevin Durant

5. Roger Federer

4. Neymar

3. Lionel Messi

2. Lebron James

1. Cristiano Ronaldo
