Mulvey stars on return to action
Vinny Mulvey of Raheny Shamrock AC had good reason to be happy with his victory in Tuesday night's State Street Docklands 8k road race in downtown Dublin.
The Raheny runner endured a long spell of injury and has only returned to racing in recent weeks. "I had a lot of trouble with an injury to my left leg but I hope that is all behind me now," Mulvey said.
He won in 24:34, 11 seconds clear of Barry Minnock of Rarhfarnam WSAF AC. Alan McCormack of DSD was third in 25:15.
The women's race in Docklands resulted in a close duel between Lizzie Lee of Leevale AC in Cork and Flora Women's Mini-Marathon winner Caitriona Jennings of Sportsworld AC.
The pair ran together up to the final 400m when Lee bolted for home to win in 29:18 from Jennings, 29:22, and Jill Hodgins, 30:12.
Some 3,000 people took part in this popular event which was run in cold and wet conditions.
However, the bad weather in no way dampened the enthusiasm of the participants, with a carnival atmosphere prevailing.
The event raised over €10,000 for the Docklands Schools Initiative.
