Motorsport: Welsh raiders take top honours in Carlow

Paul Phelan

Welsh drivers took the top two places in Carlow CC's third round of the Dunlop National Rally Championship, the Seven Oaks Hotel Rally, with Hugh Hunter taking a second Irish win of the year.

After nine stages based on Carlow town, he had just five seconds to spare at the finish over countryman Melvyn Evans.

Third place, and the honour of first home crew, went to Roy White and James O'Brien, whose modified MG ZR led the field on the opening stage, but was overhauled by the two Subaru Impreza drivers. Paddy McVeigh and Gary McElhinney were next in another Impreza.

Daniel McKenna put up another strong performance in the Manx National Rally, driving his outdated Escort to sixth place, the only two-wheel-drive car to get into the top 10.
