Motorsport: Smith rewarded for bright start

Dublin touring car star Aron Smith is hoping it's third time lucky having been selected by Motorsport Ireland as the Dunlop Young Racing Driver of the Month for April.

The 21-year-old from Rathfarnham wins the first of six monthly nominations for the Dunlop Driver of the Year award for the Sexton Trophy on the back of his most impressive start to a season since moving to UK racing three years ago.

Two wins at Thruxton and an earlier third-place finish at Brands Hatch mean Smith lies third in the points standings in the Renault Clio Cup UK series, one of the top British Touring Car feeder series.

Smith, whose brother Gavin is a former British touring car racer, has been nominated in each of the last two seasons for the prestigious Dunlop Racing Driver of the Year award and will be hoping that his excellent start to the year will go a long way to securing an important double by the season's end.

The former karter, who was Irish Open champion five years ago, was fourth in the UK Clio series last year and has also raced in the Italian Clio Cup, winning races at iconic Grand Prix circuits Monza and Imola.

While the long-term ambition is to emulate his brother by racing in a major international touring car championship, Aron is currently studying structural engineering in the Dublin Institute of Technology.

Having been selected as the first Dunlop Driver of the Month, the Smith's Building Supplies-supported driver will be assessed in competition with five other nominees for the end-of-season Dunlop Motorsport Ireland Young Racing Driver of the Year award, worth €50,000.
