Mixed luck for junior riders

EQUESTRIAN: junior rider Bertram Allen and pony rider Matt Garrigan picked up good placings at the Future Champions International at Hagen, Germany yesterday, but Irish teams failed to impress in all three Nations Cup categories.

Garrigan steered Dr Spot into fifth in the Pony Two-Phase, while Allen slotted Molly Malone into sixth in the Junior equivalent.

But Allen, partnering Wild Thing, was the only member of the Junior side to stay clear as team-mates Kelly Taggart (Charly), Shannon McKenzie (Peyroux) and Max O'Reilly-Hyland (Dinaro) each amassed nine faults. Ireland failed to qualify for the second round.

With only three team-members lining out, the chances of the Irish Children's team were scuppered when Amy O'Hare (Creevagh Red Clover) was eliminated in the first round. Garrigan (Future Interest), Molly O'Shea (More Clover), Darragh Ryan (Quantum Light) and Tom Foley (Crown Jewel) finished fifth in the Pony Nations Cup.

Meanwhile, in Cannes, Billy Twomey and Tinka's Serenade slotted into sixth in the 1.50m Jump-Off.
