Megaw dampens UCD celebrations

Rugby cricket Gaelic Games

Despite being a scratch side and having just two days together to prepare for the clash, the Combined Universities XV did enough to dampen spirits at UCD RFC's centenary celebrations at the Belfield Bowl last night, with an impressive 41-22 victory.

Hooker Gareth Megaw barrelled over for two tries to help the visitors go in at the break 15-10 ahead. Replacement Andrew Burke scorched over for another try within two minutes of the resumption and they continued to dominate to the finish.

Australia captain Ricky Ponting will miss the final match of the one-day series against Sri Lanka and return to state cricket in a bid to fine-tune his game ahead of the Ashes.

Ponting made just 10 as his side succumbed to Sri Lanka in the second one-dayer in Sydney yesterday.

It was Australia's seventh successive defeat in all formats and a result which means there is nothing at stake in game three in Brisbane tomorrow.

Therefore, the National Selection Panel (NSP) have opted to give Ponting more time to prepare for Tasmania's Sheffield Shield Clash against Queensland in Hobart, which starts on Wednesday.

The first Ashes Test gets under way on November 25.

Abbey CS Ferrybank put in a terrific second-half performance to beat Borris in the Leinster Vocational Schools SHC, storming out of the traps after the restart to prevail on a 3-8 to 1-9 scoreline.
