Mcguigan shows class
It has been a truly fantastic Ladbrokes Irish Derby thus far and the last of the first-round sessions at Shelbourne on Saturday really had all kinds of everything .
The outstanding performers would have to be classified as Ballymac Vic, Sparta Maestro and the incredible Tyrur McGuigan.
Words are proving inadequate at this stage to describe the special talents of those remarkable litter brothers Tyrur McGuigan and Tyrur Big Mike two years after they finished first and second in the Derby final.
Big Mike had strutted his stuff on Thursday night and this time it was McGuigan's turn to show that there is plenty of life in the old dog yet. He flew out and ran out an easy winner from Headleys Charley in 29.76.
Liam Dowling's Ballymac Vic lived up to his ante-post favourite's tag with a blistering run in the final heat of the round. He was crowded at the start, before rushing to the front before the bend and then stormed clear to win by six and a half lengths from Katies Quadrigo in 29.51, thus equalling Big Mike's previous best time.
Sparta Maestro was foot- perfect in winning Heat 15 when leading all the way and then running home a four- length winner from Skywalker Puma in 29.54.
The second round will be run on Thursday and Saturday.
Graham Holland had a double in the quarter-finals of the Irish Sprint Cup at Dundalk on Saturday when Knockglass Billy flew around in 21.03 and Cambushmore followed up with a 21.14 success.
