McCambridge drive pays off with car prize

Cliona Foley

MARIA McCambridge was delighted to win her first big 'city' marathon in her home town but reckoned her husband, coach and four-time Irish champion Gary Crossan would be even happier with this year's special prize.

Yesterday's prize-fund included cash prizes of €7,000 downward for the first 10 men and women home, but the overall winners got an eco-friendly Renault Fluence ZE car each, worth €30,000.

That couldn't have come at a better time for McCambridge's running-mad household as their family car came to a firm standstill three months ago.

"It just died, a complete write-off, we only got €200 for it, so I'm sure Gary will be pretty happy to hear we've got a new one!" she said.
