mayo keep cool heads to bag euro bronze

Mayo AC women's team, representing Ireland, took third spot at the 25th European Clubs Road Race Cup in Almeirim in Portugal.

The four-member team (pictured right) recorded fine times for the 15k race held on a flat course in warm conditions -- temperatures reached 25 degrees.

The course consisted of three loops around Almeirim. The women's race was won by Portuguese international Dulce Felix in a time of 51:01.

The Mayo AC team was led by Mary Gleeson, who finished ninth in 56:14. She was closely followed by Colette Tuohy in 59:01, Kathy Connolly in 63:18, and Sarah Syron in 68:37.

It became clear early on that Maratona CP would win the team event. Second place went to SC Braga, but there was great excitement when Mayo AC were confirmed as the third-placed team.

The Mayo AC women had plenty of support during the race from club officials, as well as from the large contingent of Raheny Shamrocks AC supporters, whose team finished fourth in the men's half-marathon.
