Boxer Darren O'Neill believes that Katie Taylor is the greatest Irish boxer of all-time and that we will never see the success enjoyed by the Bray woman again.

Taylor created international boxing history today after being crowned AIBA World Elite lightweight champion in South Korea.

The Wicklow orthodox finished on top of the 60kg podium for the 5th time in-a-row since New Delhi 2006 after beating Azerbaijan’s Yana Allekseeva on a unanimous decision (40-36,39-37,39-37) in Jeju.

Speaking to RTE Radio One this morning, O'Neill said that because of "suspect scoring" that had been witnessed in Taylor's semi-final he was a little nervous, but lauded the boxer on a "convincing" victory.

"She won the first round convincingly on two of the judges and after the third round she was only ahead on one and level on two others," he said. "It was down to the last round."

"It turned out they all gave her the last round and she won the last one convincingly.

When asked on where it places the Irish woman in the pantheon of Irish boxers, the former Olympian was in little doubt.

"As far as I'm concerned, Katie Taylor is the greatest of all-time. She has six European titles, five worlds and an Olympic gold."

"I think she is the greatest of all-time and I have said this through the last few years before she ever had the medals that we don't appreciate her enough.

"Thankfully in the last few years she is beginning to get the credit she deserves.
