John Kavanagh: There are many fighters in SBG ready to emulate Conor McGregor

John Kavanagh says that 2015 promises to be even bigger for SBG with a whole host of fighters aiming to emulate the exploits Conor McGregor, Cathal Pendred and Paddy Holohan.

All three fighters will be fighting in Boston in the upcoming UFC event- McGregor will headline with a fight against Dennis Siver – and Kavanagh is hugely excited by the calibre of fighter that is coming through his Straight Blast Gym (SBG) gym.

When asked whether he sees more talent breaking through into the UFC, Kavanagh is fully convinced it is a matter of when and not if.

"That’s a given, you know that, come on," he told Independent.ie "We have a heavy fight team of around 30 guys now and they have shown that there is a possibility getting into there. 2015 is going to be even bigger."

Kavanagh turned his back on an engineering career in the early 2000’s to begin coaching fighters. His first gym was a rented garage with some mats on the floor, but today, Kavanagh’s SBG gym is a massive facility with all the equipment and space the modern mixed martial artist requires.

The new facility is only a year old but he is excited with the level of progress made and the increased interest in the sport.

"Numbers have bumped in the club over the last 12 months but I believe it’s a group of factors, not just the fact I have had some UFC fighters. I was always known for having good fighters in SBG."

"The fact that the guys are doing so well and the rise of the sport in general, the numbers have shot up."

"We are literally celebrating our first year being here. If you would of shown me this five years ago I would of probably laughed at you."

"This month is the busiest I have ever had in my life. I have three in the UFC 25 guys going to Lisbon for the European championships and fights in Poland and Portugal."
