Irish record holder Matthews heads ballyhaunis 8k line-up

Entries are rolling in for the Ballyhaunis 8km Road Race in east Mayo on Saturday September 24 (4.0). Former Irish Olympians Jerry Kiernan, David Matthews and Noel Berkeley have each accepted an invitation for the final race in the Mayo ACCC Cellular Road League.

"There was a thriving athletic club in Ballyhaunis back in the late 1960s and two of that original team, Padraig Keane and Frank Greally, were selected to run on the Irish men's senior team in the 1972 World Cross Country Championships in Cambridge," said Ballyhaunis 8k race director Martin Fitzmaurice.

Dave Brady (Raheny Shamrock AC) and Nuala Reilly (Drogheda & District) will also be in action.

Kiernan (right), who finished ninth in the Olympic Marathon in LA in 1984, was a Clonliffe Harriers team-mate of Keane who hails from nearby Ballinlough.

Matthews, who still holds the Irish men's senior 800m record of 1:44.82, now works as a personal trainer and Berkeley -- known as the King of Ballycotton -- will travel from his home in East Cork.

Entries are open online at www.runireland.com and www.ballyhaunis8k.com. Martin Fitzmaurice: 087 245 5989. Early entry is advised.
