National champion Ryan Mulen almost added an international honour to his CV but finished 0.48 seconds behind the winner of the under-23 time trial event at the World Championships in Ponferrada, Spain.

The 20-year-old was seventh in the same event 12 months ago and came in second just behind Campbell Flakemore of Australia over the 36.15 kilometre distance.

The Irishman had held the lead only for Flakemore to just pip him by less than a second.

He will compete in the under-23 road race on Friday.
